With more than 17 years of experience in the legal practice, Gunamalar was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 2006 and has achieved various milestone ever since. She is also a qualified mediator, and accomplished her Master of Criminal Justice (University of Malaya) in 2008.

Gunamalar thrives in legal practice, especially in matters relating to family law, criminal defence and civil litigation. One of the most high profile case handled by Gunamalar is the case of Loh Siew Hong, which the father had unilaterally converted their children to Islam. Gunamalar also single handedly conducted multiple trials for murder, drug trafficking, and appeals to Federal Court.

Having appeared in appellate courts and as counsels, Gunamalar is often invited to be a lecturer in renowned universities in Malaysia such as University of Malaya (UM) and Multimedia University (MMU). She also often appears in the media for her accomplishments, and invited by ASTRO to be a guest speaker on sexual harassments.
